Flock Size: Our base flock is around 20-25 animals which increases each spring to around 50-60.
How long have you had sheep: The Flying Heart Ranch has been raising Navajo-Churro Sheep since 2018.
Why is the N-CSA important: Since the Navajo-Churro sheep is a critically endangered breed, we believe that every N-C sheep is important and should be registered to ensure the sustainability of this heritage breed. Registering the sheep to ensure that they meet the standard is critical to this historically important sheep.
What are some of your ideas for the N-CSA: Foremost I am committed to ensuring that the Navajo-Churro Sheep survives as a breed and eventually is no longer critically endangered. Also, I am interested in ensuring that we understand the characteristics of the Navajo-Churro sheep- the ability to thrive in the harsh environment of the Southwest and produce the beautiful wool fleece associated with the great traditions of Navajo and Hispanic fiber arts. Finally, a better understanding of the historical aspects that made this breed so successful on the arid landscape.
